When International Paper’s Forest Resource Division
needed a better way to manage their land leases to hunting clubs, they turned
to PST’s business solutions group to develop a web-based intranet solution.
Company Overview
International Paper is the largest private landowner in the U.S., with a
100-year tradition of managing their forests in an environmentally responsible
way. Their Engineered Wood Products business provides panels, poles and a
variety of engineered products for the building industry, while their Lumber
Business provides both pine and machine stress-rated lumber. The Forest
Resources Business manages IP forests and provides expertise and seedlings to
landowners across the U.S.
Business Challenge
The Forest Resources Division of International Paper leases land across the
nation to over 8,000 hunting clubs, representing 120,000 members. Previously,
each region would process the leases for hunting clubs in its region. Much of
this process was performed manually. Renewal processes, lease terms, and rates
were not standardized across the company, making it difficult to analyze or
aggregate data at the division level. Also, each region made its own technology
choice when it came to managing leases. The data environment included Lotus
Approach databases, Excel spreadsheets and Access databases.
Solution
PST developed a web-based Intranet application utilizing Microsoft .NET
technology to address the need for centralizing lease data. The application
allows a regional representative to renew hunt club leases, modify hunt club
membership, and effectively communicate with both lessees and division level
staff. Staff members having a division level security clearance are able to
view lease data and produce custom reports as needed. Custom reports may be
exported to Excel, Word, or Access for further processing.
Benefits
-
Centralized data allows easier reporting.
-
Custom Reports maintain individuality amongst regions.
-
Easy renewals--saves time, reduces error.
-
Standardized processes—reduces error, improves productivity.
