Savannah Re-Load needed to upgrade their commodities activity/inventory
tracking system, and they had a requirement to give their clients the ability
to monitor their products as these products passed through their storage
facilities. Savannah Re-Load turned to PST, Inc. for a solution to both of
these requirements.
Company Overview
Savannah Re-Load, LLC, is a commodities storage and transit center for products
from all around the globe. These products arrive at Savannah Re-Load via ship,
rail, or truck; they are stored at Savannah Re-Load’s facilities awaiting
transit to their final destinations; and they are shipped out, again via ship,
rail or truck. Savannah Re-Load maintains Bills of Lading and other
logistics accounting documents.
Business Challenge
Savannah Re-Load’s current tracking system was an old, legacy, green-screen
application that was no longer supported and had limited reporting
capabilities. It allowed entries, orders, and reports to “fall through the
cracks,” it allowed duplicate data entries in redundant data platforms, and it
prevented timely reporting to customers. This system had to be consolidated and
streamlined so that Savannah Re-Load could promise its customers detailed
tracking, accurate accounting, and timely reporting of all products shipping
through their facilities. The company had made an initial attempt to develop a
Microsoft Access database to emulate the existing functionality, but they lost
the developer when he took another job. PST was brought in to continue the
effort and, more importantly, provide future support through its own resources,
such that Savannah Re-Load would not be vulnerable to loss of development
talent.
Solution
Using MS Access 2003 and VBA, PST built a comprehensive tracking, accounting
and reporting system for all commodities passing through Savannah Re-Load. The
database has a network interface, giving several users simultaneous access to
data entry and reporting. Other benefits include: increased accuracy and
timeliness of data entry and reporting; decreased likelihood of data omissions;
and no more double entry of data. In addition, using ASP.NET technology, PST
built a secure, real-time online customer-reporting system. This system allows
Savannah Re-Load’s clients to access up-to-the-minute status and accounting of
their products via the Internet. The system actually gives Savannah
Re-Load a distinct competitive advantage in their industry, as they are now the
only area facility of their type that gives customers direct access to data on
their commodities. The online reporting system also reduces time spent by staff
responding to client requests for status reports.
Benefits
-
Elimination of redundant data entry.
-
Increased accuracy and timeliness of data entry and reporting.
-
No dependency on in-house developers. Ongoing support from PST.
-
Direct customer access to commodity status reports.
